March Science Reads - Invisible Women by Caroline March Science Reads - Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez

Yes sorry really late with this one!! I did finish the book in March, but editing the YouTube video review took it out of me 🥲 Full review on Goodreads & YouTube - comment “science reads” to get the link in your DMs 🤗

Rating ⭐️ ⭐️/5 …

I tried to read this book three times. I started it halfway through my PhD, had to put it down. Tried the audiobook and... same problem. Finally finished it with the physical copy so I could set it down and walk away when I needed to.

Ok start with the positives, it’s important information everyone should know. E.g. Car safety data! When a woman is in a car crash, she is 47% more likely to be seriously injured than a man and 17% more likely to die, all because crash test dummies are modeled on a 5’9”, 170-lb male body.

Now into the cons. Trans women don’t appear in this book. In a book explicitly about how failing to collect data renders people invisible, that is a painful irony. Black women, disabled women, and women in the Global South are also significantly underrepresented. Criado Pérez acknowledged this — she said she struggled to find disaggregated data. But that scholarship existed. Dorothy Roberts had been writing about medical racism and Black women’s health for decades before this book was published.

It’s an important topic, I just think it could’ve been executed better. As someone who believes everything she has written, I still had a hard time getting through.

To end this review on a lighter note, I included my fav sci-fi that’s been made into movie/tv show for anyone looking for a fix after Project Hail Mary :) #sciencereads #bookstagram #sciencebooks #scifi #projecthailmary
