Scientist does not mean researcher or staying in a Scientist does not mean researcher or staying in academia 🫶

I’ve been going through the archives lately remembering my past life as a researcher 🥹 part of me misses research, I can feel my love for science as I look back on these clips, how excited I was just to be welcome in the space I used to dream I’d get to spend my days in🔬

And while I value everything I learned from my time in research, I’ve been able to have a much bigger impact on science now I’ve left research. Because what does science research actually impact if the science never leaves the lab? If it doesn’t go on to help make a medicine, if the public doesn’t understand what they’ve been paying for, if we don’t teach the next generation about science, if we keep all the scientists locked away in the ivory tower of academia?

If we want to have our research make an impact, we need more scientists to be willing to explore careers where they can share their scientific background with other communities.

I hope this finds the scientists who needed to hear this today ❤️🤗 algorithm do your thing 😉

And if you’ve made it this far, imma let you in on a little secret, I’m working on a new podcast specifically geared to careers leaving academia!! Coming this summer 🤯 you can follow here for updates ➡️ @unprogrammedscientist 💛

This is why I think scicomm should be taught as part of a science degree! Definitely if you’re in a master’s or PhD program.

We learn as we go for the most part - if you’re in scicomm rn this isn’t me coming at you!🫶 just holding all of us more accountable so we can move science forward and accurately bring it to more people :)
