The Science Behind the Perfume 🧪💨 Meet Future Soci The Science Behind the Perfume 🧪💨 Meet Future Society’s latest perfume - Wandering Rain 🌧️

Did you know the scent you associate with rain isn’t the scent of rain? Future Society partnered with Arcea Labs to dive into the microbiome of rain to capture the notes of rain before it interacts with the environment.

As an added bonus, one of the notes is the first flush of Darjeeling tea, so not only is there some cool science in there but you can smell like tea too!

What is the grievance process in grad school? I g What is the grievance process in grad school?

I got a number of DMs about this following up my post about the Harvard Grad Student Workers strike, so thought I’d dive more into the process!

This is very near and dear to my heart. Grad students deserve protections. We are stuck in this messy middle not fully considered employees or students, but also meaning discrimination and harassment can run rampant without clear checks and balances.

This post is mainly to address what we should be asking for (and why unionizing is so good for grad students) but if you are in a sticky situation right now, these are the steps I recommend:

1. Document EVERYTHING. More than just your lab notebook, keep a diary of experiments you did and when. Every time you meet with your supervisor, send a follow up email with what you covered so they can’t change expectations later. Send weekly progress updates. Keep an excel where you log your time.
2. Speak to the ombudsman early and regularly, bcc’ing them even in your emails and reports
3. If you are unionized, go speak with them right away. Earlier the better. Even if it seems small now, it can get worse fast.
4. If you are not unionized, go talk to someone at your graduate student government (and genuinely consider starting a union!!)
5. If things are escalating, figure out who you can talk to that will have your back. Committee members? Grad program director? But be careful here, they can always report it back to your advisor
6. The best piece of advice I can give for sticking it out is find passions that excited and motivate you beyond the lab. See friends and family whenever you can. Do not let them win ❤️‍🩹

Finally, if this is of interest to you, I wrote my first ever substack breaking all of this down in more detail. #scicomm #academicreform #science #scienceresearch #phd
